The sovereignty of God

Sovereignty means having ultimate power.
In God’s sovereignty, no one is above Him.
He does what He wants, when He wants and how He wants and no one can question Him.
In 1 Sam 8 1-22 The children of Israel demanded a king, even after God had told them the consequences…thry were still bent on what they wanted. According to them, they wanted to be like other nations.

Despite God wanting something else for them, He went along with their desire.

There are times God allows us go in our own way to teach us and then bring us back

The people realized their errors in 1 Samuel 12 from verse 16
“Now therefore, stand and see this great thing which the Lord will do before your eyes: Is today not the wheat harvest? I will call to the Lord , and He will send thunder and rain, that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord , in asking a king for yourselves.” So Samuel called to the Lord , and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel. And all the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die; for we have added to all our sins the evil of asking a king for ourselves.” Then Samuel said to the people, “Do not fear. You have done all this wickedness; yet do not turn aside from following the Lord , but serve the Lord with all your heart. And do not turn aside; for then you would go after empty things which cannot profit or deliver, for they are nothing. For the Lord will not forsake His people, for His great name’s sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you His people. Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way. Only fear the Lord , and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you. But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king.”
I Samuel 12:16‭-‬25

Verse 22 shows how merciful God is. It is because of Hos mercy that we are not consumed.

James 1:13-17
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

God’s thoughts toward us are thoughts of peace…He has good things planned for us but there are ways we can “receive” what God has for us, going about it the wrong way. The end is not what justifies the means when walking with God.

We behave like the children of Israel too when we want things. Because others have kings, we want a king too…but is that God’s sovereign will for us?
The children of God wanted peace and victory, which God wanted for them as well but they thought it would come through having a king.

It is best for us to only want what God wants us to have, when He wants us to have it and how He wants us to have it. This takes tremendous faith but that’s who we are. People of faith. We trust in him with all of our heart, without leaning on our own understanding.

We should always remember that there is one who is above us and this should inform our behavior and thoughts
